Can type 2 Diabetes Be Reversed

Updated: Jan 5

One of the most common questions I hear is:

Can Type 2 diabetes be reversed or cured?

The short answer? Yes. (in the diabetes world, we use the term remission) But here’s the better question: Can YOU Do It?

Can you become the person who consistently takes the proper steps to put your diabetes in remission?

Look, I’m not here to sugarcoat things (pun intended). Starting new habits is hard. Most of us dive in fueled by motivation, but let’s be real—motivation fizzles out.

The only way to stick with a habit is to make it part of who you are.

A great quote from Atomic Habits I Have on my Fridge: "Improvements are only temporary until they become part of who you are."

So, it’s not just about whether diabetes can be reversed or go into remission. It’s more of a personalized concern: Can YOU make the changes and stick with them long enough to see results?

Some people succeed (and others don’t)and we’ve all been there—setting big goals only to fall short.

  • You start a diet, but stress takes over.

  • You join a gym but stop going after two weeks.

  • You try to control your blood sugar but feel overwhelmed by conflicting advice and the number of things you have to do, so you just let go and GIVE UP.

Sound familiar? Life happens. But here's the truth: Most of the time, we give up on something—even when we know it's good for us—it is because of one significant roadblock: a lack of clarity.

When we don’t fully understand what we’re doing, it can feel overwhelming and downright frustrating.

We’ve all been on both sides of this. Sometimes, we’re the one who “gets it”—we know a topic so well that others marvel at how easy we make it look. But we’ve also been the person watching someone else breeze through something we struggle with, feeling stuck and exasperated.

The same applies to managing diabetes. It can feel like an uphill battle, but here’s the key: the people who manage it well—or even put it into remission—share one crucial trait.

They understand the fundamentals of diabetes. They know what’s happening in their bodies, and instead of focusing on just treating symptoms, they zero in on the root cause. That’s the game-changer. By shifting focus to what really matters, they take control—

And you can, too. (let's Clarify what diabetes is at it's root)

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Here’s a myth to smash: Diabetes is NOT just about high blood sugar.

High blood sugar is a symptom, not the root cause. The real culprit behind Type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Whenever you eat, your body releases insulin (a hormone made by the pancreas). Think of insulin as a key.

  2. This key’s job is to unlock your cells so glucose (sugar) from your food can get inside and fuel your body.

  3. But when you have diabetes, those “locks” on your cells get jammed. This is due to fat buildup around the cells, making them resistant to insulin (a.k.a. insulin resistance).

What happens next? The sugar stays in your bloodstream, causing high blood sugar levels.

This is Diabetes

Over time, this leads to all the scary complications: numb feet, vision problems, and more.

If you want to put diabetes into remission, you’ve got to attack it at the source, the sourcde is insulin resistance.
It is a chain reaction from there, you Fix insulin resistance, the glucose won't stay in your blood, your pancreas won't be exhausted, and boom, No more Diabetes it. So regarding the lock and key metaphor, The goal is to clean out those locks so the key (insulin with glucose) can finally get where it needs to go.

How Do You Fix Insulin Resistance?

The good news? You can fix it. The even better news? It doesn’t have to be complicated.

It starts with what you eat.

Here's another myth I wanted to talk about.

Most Diabetics are told to eat less carbs, but the focus should be on becoming more carbohydrate tolerant so that carbs won't hurt you as much; again, all this starts with reducing insulin resistance.
